Finding a lawyer for your case

Finding a lawyer

So you need a lawyer and you don't know any.  The first thing you need to do is find a lawyer who specializes in you type of case.  Once you have a list of lawyers in your area who work on your type of case, learn about them.  The websites listed below will help you with both tasks.

1.  The Wyoming State Bar Association has a free services called the Lawyer Referral Service.  It provides people with lists of lawyers by practice area such as family law, estates, criminal defense, and so on.  The services is online here.  You may also call the Bar Association at 307-632-9061.  The Lawyer Referral Service does not suggest which lawyer you should choose.

2.  For help with this you can turn to the Martindale-Hubble lawyer directory (http://www.martindale.com).  It lets you search by practice area and by town.  It's not a complete list.  Not all lawyers choose to be listed.  The directory provides a basic rating system based on the opinions of other lawyers.  The ratings are a good guide, but do not rely on them too much.

The best way to learn about lawyers is by talking to their past clients and by having a free consultation with lawyers.  A consultation is a short meeting where you explain your case and the lawyer gives you an idea of what he or she can do, and for how much.  Many lawyers do not charge for this first meeting.

You should feel comfortable with the lawyer you hire.  If something doesn't seem right, talk to another lawyer.  Don't feel pressured to hire the first lawyer you meet.
