About Us

Legal Aid of Wyoming Inc. is a federally funded, non-profit law firm.  We provide legal assistance to low income individuals living in Wyoming.

Legal Aid maintains four offices across Wyoming.  The administrative office is located in Cheyenne and satellite offices are located in Casper, Lander and the Wind River Indian Reservation.  Each office is staffed by attorneys and support staff, trained to assist you with your legal questions and problems.

Legal Aid provides representation in many, though not all, types of civil cases.  We cannot represent defendants in criminal cases.  If you have been charged with a crime, you should request that the court appoint an attorney to represent you if you cannot afford one.

Eligibility: Applicants must first financially qualify to be eligible for services.  Each applicant must disclose gross monthly income, number of persons in the family, other assets, and provide a brief statement of the legal problem.

Intake: Monday, Wednesday and Friday between 9:00 and 2:00 Mountain time, Legal Aid screens and accepts new clients. Client may call the central intake office by calling (307) 432-0807 in Cheyenne and 1-877-432-9955 toll free around the state of Wyoming.

Priorities: Unfortunately, Legal Aid is not able to assist everyone who financially qualifies.  The Board of Directors determines the types of cases that Legal Aid accepts.  Generally, our program may be able to provide legal assistance with:

  • Shelter: Evictions and other lanlord-tenant issues, utility shut-offs, public housing, unhealthy or dangerous housing conditions
  • Income: Social Security, Supplmental Security Income (SSI), Medicare, Medicaid, and public benefits
  • Consumer Debt: Repossession of property, bad debt, garnishment, and bankruptcy
  • Migrant: In addition to the general priorities: wage claims, housing, health and safety issues, community education
  • Family: We assist with completion of pro se (do-it-yourself) legal packets in the areas of divorce, custody modification, and child support modification.  These packets are available from any Wyoming District Court for $10.00.
  • Tribal Court: Cases in Shoshone and Arapaho Tribal Court

For Seniors: Legal Aid of Wyoming also offers the Legal Services Developer Program, a free resource for those 60 years old and older (and for those helping senior citizens).  The Developer Program, funded by the Wyoming Department of Health, Aging Division, provides:

  • Referrals to attorneys, state and federal agencies, and other organizations
  • Help untangling bills, claims, and other types of paper work
  • Advanced medical directives
  • Information about any legal or legally-related question of concern to seniors, including: adult protective services, bankruptcy, debt collection, guardianship, hospital care, landlord / tenant, long term care, Medicare and Medicaid, small claims court, SSI and Social Security, unpaid bills, and wills
